Dropbox Folder Sync addon [Official Page]

Sync any folder with Dropbox  in a snap!

Note: See our clarification on some of the concerns raised by our users below.

Description

Dropbox Folder Sync is a simple app for Dropbox that allows you to seamlessly sync folders outside the Dropbox folder. Pretty handy for syncing Firefox profiles, saved games, music library, Outlook data files etc.,  to Dropbox directly from their locations. Sync and Unsync to Dropbox just by using the right click menu on the folder. It actually works by moving the folder into Dropbox and then putting a symlink in its place.

If you are new to Dropbox, it is a popular file synchronization and backup tool which automatically syncs all your devices to the cloud. You can also share and collaborate on your stuff with others. It also offers you 2 GB of free online storage. (Get Dropbox or Know more).

But one limitation of Dropbox is that, it will only sync the files in your Dropbox folder. Our app helps to overcome this limitation by allowing any folder to sync with Dropbox right from its location.

Minimum System Requirments

  • Works with Windows XP (SP 3), Vista, Windows 7 and 8.
  • Requires Microsoft .NET framework 4.0
  • Dropbox Folder Sync addon requires an NTFS partition with Dropbox installed in that partition.
  • Note: Dropbox Folder Sync does NOT work with network drives.

Usage

  1. Run the Installer
  2. To sync‘  a folder with Dropbox, right click it and click “Dropbox Folder Sync –> Sync with Dropbox“.
  3. The first time you run the application it automatically sets the Dropbox Folder (Or whenever the current Dropbox folder setting is corrupt)
If this detection fails, it prompts you to enter the Dropbox path through interface.
  4. For changing the Dropbox folder setting, go to Start Menu -> Programs -> Dropbox Folder Sync.
  5. Unsync it, if you don’t need it anymore in Dropbox, by again right-clicking (at original path) and selecting “Dropbox Folder Sync –> Unsync with Dropbox”.

Features in detail

    Sync

  • Moves the source folder (the folder on which you right-click)  to the Dropbox. Creates a symbolic link at that location pointing to the corresponding folder inside Dropbox.
  • Thus you can access the same folder from two locations.
  • Symbolic links are created using the junction utility (installs automatically with the setup) from Sysinternals.
  • If a folder with the same name already exists in your Dropbox, then it asks if it should merge & overwrite. If you wish not to merge, it moves the folder to Dropbox with a modified name.
  • While syncin’, please ensure that no file in the folder is locked by any process.

    Unsync

  • Deletes the symbolic link, and moves the corresponding folder in Dropbox back to its original location.

    Change Dropbox Path

  • DFS automatically detects the Dropbox path at the first usage and whenever the Dropbox path setting is corrupt (for eg. Some path which is not a folder).
  • If you feel the folder is not the Dropbox folder or if you wish to sync the folder with some other folder which is inside Dropbox, Use the “Change” button on the GUI to change this setting.

Clarification 10-Apr-2014

We are deeply sorry for the confusion caused to some of the users below.
This is to clarify that using this program is perfectly SAFE :

To check for any updates, the program makes a request to http://bitly.com/XY5jlu (which resolves to http://satyadeepk.in/updateDFS.txt) which just contains the latest version number.

My wordpress server (satyadeepk.in)  was hosted behind the Cloudflare CDN for enhanced speed. Unfortunately, some of the Cloudflare IP addresses seems to be flagged wrongly as spam. This was the cause of the false positives some users reported.

To prevent such confusion in the future, I disabled Cloudflare for my website.
We can fully assure that there is nothing malicious with the program and it is FULLY SAFE.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at satyadeep@satyadeepk.in

Thanks for your trust in us,

Great application. I would like to be in your consideration if this application can be improved in the following way I describe. Instead to be ever a two way sync application, as now it is, you must consider the possibility to allow the use of it as an only one way backup application in the sense that makes an automated backup of the files modified in the original folder to the dropbox folder, but without the possibility that any modification made in the dropbox folder can alter the original folder. May be it would be a tottaly different application from now it is. Best regards, and thank you for offering us this marvel application.

  • AtariBaby

I must now reverse myself. I’ve found a situation where this method does not work well, though it is excellent otherwise.

If you sync a folder like a Pictures folder, and you have an iPad or other device that syncs with that folder, iTunes and iPhoto do NOT like this redirection setup at all. It created a big mess. Fortunately however, undoing with this program is a snap and everything worked fine after I put things back to the way they were.

  • AtariBaby

I think (but am not sure) that SyncToy is best for such situations. It’s free. I *think* it keeps two versions of the files and folders. I think.

  • Liz

is there anyway I can install this without administrative privileges…

  • Frank

    Hi,

    great program.

however, I do not get /see a symbolic link in my windows explorer when I sync files. how can i get that to show? I cannot tell / see what files I have synced in windows explorer because I have no indicator….
    sad

Great app. I would like to have a way to prevent deletion of a file on my computer. We have several people that share files. If they delete the file inadvertently, I would like to have the control that would prevent losing the file on may computer. Thanks

  • Suchai

I had initially synced a set of folders containing pictures from my Windows “Pictures” folder with my Dropbox account. Then I ended up moving those folders from the root Dropbox folder to the “Photos” folder within Dropbox, without realizing I had disturbed the shortcut links. Is there any way to restore the links?

  • Bogdan

Hi. This add-on is great. there’s only one problem that i get. When i select “unsync with Dropbox” i get a message that says “”The folder is not a symbolic link” (on Win 7). Also, after i select “sync with dropbox” the icon of the original folder appears like a shortcut (with the little arrow).

After reading the other comments i saw that i’m not the only one who has that problem. Is this fixable?

We are glad you found our tiny software helpful. We just added the donate button on top.

    Here is the link! http://satyadeepk.in/dropbox-folder-sync/donate

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Yes, it moves the original folder to your Dropbox and creates a symbolic link at the original location. We can’t do it the other way round because, if the symbolic link is inside Dropbox, Dropbox won’t sync the files until the next Dropbox restart.

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Hi, you have to click the Unsync option on the folder in the original location, but not at the Dropbox location.

The icon appears like a shortcut on the original folder because it is a symbolic link. But any program using that folder would not find any difference and thinks that as a real folder!

    Hope that helps.

  • cosmo

same here, and still no reply from the author after several months. Please do get back to us! I’d really like to use your app!

    thanks.

  • Thanks

Good work, thanks for this, keep up the updates and improvement and I will download and donate! thanks!

Hey Cosmo, can you try re-installing the application as an administrator.
We are looking into this issue and will push out an update soon!

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Hi, which version of Windows are you using? On Windows 7 or above, you can see a small shortcut like indicator on the folder you synced.

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Sorry, you need administrative privileges to install.

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Hi, You have to click the Unsync option on the folder at the original location, but not on the Dropbox location.

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

You can change the Default Dropbox location setting from our Preferences window.
Go to Start -> All Programs -> Dropbox Folder Sync.
Or simply go to Preferences from the right click menu on any folder.

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

The default Dropbox destination path can be changed from the Preferences window.
Right click on any folder and go to Dropbox Folder Sync –> Preferences.

I’ve used DFS in the past with no problem. I’m now trying to run on Windows 7 …. updated .Net 4.0 and I still get this error. “Microsoft .Net Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue……..blah blah.” What to do to fix this error?

  • Paul Fleming

Excuse my ignorance, but any help you can give me would be appreciated. I have been using sugarsync and dropbox. I put a majority of items in dropbox (I think it works much better) but I wanted to sync my desktop between 4 different computers I use (since i travel) so i use sugarsync for that since dropbox does not sync anything outside of its dropbox folder. I want my desktops to all sync because I use the items that show up on the desktop as a visual reminder of things to do. Onto the problem. I installed this software on my PC. I used it to create a symlink of the desktop folder and it worked great. It moved the desktop folder to the dropbox folder and created a symlink of the desktop folder and it is working on my PC flawless. So I then took my laptop and attempted to do the same think. I installed this software (ran it as an administrator). When I went to the desktop folder and told it to sync to dropbox it asked me to merge the folders and I said ok, but then it errored out saying “error moving the folder: access to the path is denied” So it worked great with my normal PC but when I try to do the same on my laptop it is no good. At this time my PC syncs the desktop folder great but I cannot get it to merge and sync on the laptop side. I decided to try a different folder so I created a folder in the C: called try1. I followed the exact same procedure and this time it worked perfect. So I tried the my documents folder and my music and my pictures and all of those directories error out the same way as the desktop folder. I would guess I have a permissions issues on the folders but i am not sure how to fix it (both computers are running windows 8). Any help I would greatly appreciate.

  • caroza

Awesome tool, sometimes it disappears from the right-click menu in Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit). I’m on v 2.7 – can you help?

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Hey, the right click menu item appears only on the folders. It doesn’t show up on normal files.

  • caroza

Hi Satyadeep, many thanks but I’m definitely right clicking on the folder. Have tried in both nav pane and view pane. If I keep the parent folder open in Windows Explorer, uninstall and reinstall, then it reappears (uninstalling doesn’t remove the symbolic link, which I should think is correct behaviour). Turns up in between the two VLC items exactly as in your screenshot, and then disappears after a few days. Hope you can find the issue – it’s a great little tool!

  • Jaap

Works, but how to link the folder, but not the sub-folders?

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

Unfortunately that is not possible. If a folder is synced, all it’s sub folders are synced as well.

  • Steve

I used this plug-in on Windows 8 perfectly, but I have upgraded to 8.1 and had to re-download. Now when I right click “My Pictures” folder and sync to my Dropbox folder everything seems to work and all the pictures appear in my Dropbox folder. However when I go back to “My Pictures” folder, it is empty? I’ve had to then copy all my pictures back into the “My Pictures” folder, which now means I have 2 copies of everything?

  • Patrick D

I have run into a problem with Windows 8.1. When I try to copy a file into the synced directory, it seems to crash explorer.exe, which immediately restarts. Any ideas?

  • Bill

Got excited, downloaded it and….. won’t sync folders mapped from the network….
    Any way around this?

  • flustered

Trying to “unsync” my folder and getting “Error Unsyncin’: Access to the path userusernamefile name is denied. Why can’t I unsync and have it delete the symbolic link? Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Confused User

I can see the potential of this addon but i can’t get it to work. It keeps telling me i need permission to move the folder and it cancels the operation. I am definitely the admin and have no other users on my laptop, any help? thanks :)

  • Danyang

    Great tool to automate mklink!

  • Jmg1andonly

WOW. That is all I can say. Amazing software. It is always the smallest innovations, that make the LARGEST impact. Thank you so much for this!!!

I’d like to know where you have your Pintos project.

Hi, I’m getting an error (Unhandled exception – Index was outside the bounds of the array) when I try to sync with dropbox. I’m running Windows 8 and using DIrectory Opus rather than File Explorer. Dropbox Sync worked well on my Windows 7 computer (also using directory opus). Anyway log attached below. P.S. Thank you for making such a great application!

  • Dan Vig

    Try this guide: http://www.pxc.me.uk/misc/dropbox_mac_use.html#synch
Works perfectly for me using Macs. Trick was to first shutdown the DropBox app prior to creating the symlinks on the 2nd and 3rd machines. All symlink names need to be exactly the same. Then when DB is fired back up it will merge the contents of the symlink targets.

  • Dan Vig

… follow option #2. You don’t need the symlink tool he mentions. I use the terminal. You can probably use the windows mklink in command line to get similar results. NOTE, your folders remain OUTSIDE the DB folder, and the symlinks go inside the DB folder

  • http://www.dynamic-radio.co.uk/ Peter Thompson

I am getting a number of errors like some users on windows 8.1 – This could be because I am using Net Framework 4.5 which apparently cannot coexist with 4.0.

Is there a way around this?

    Thanks
    Peter

  • Adam

I’m confused. If the purpose of the tool is to sync folders/files with DropBox without having to move the original folder/file, how does this tool help? This tool still moves the files into the DropBox folder! But a simple cut and paste can do that… Do you have a version of this tool that leaves the original files and folders intact, and simply creates a symlink in the DropBox folder.
