Description

Dropbox Folder Sync is a simple app for Dropbox that allows you to seamlessly sync folders outside the Dropbox folder. Pretty handy for syncing Firefox profiles, saved games, music library, Outlook data files etc.,  to Dropbox directly from their locations. Sync and Unsync to Dropbox just by using the right click menu on the folder. It actually works by moving the folder into Dropbox and then putting a symlink in its place.

If you are new to Dropbox, it is a popular file synchronization and backup tool which automatically syncs all your devices to the cloud. You can also share and collaborate on your stuff with others. It also offers you 2 GB of free online storage. (Get Dropbox or Know more).

But one limitation of Dropbox is that, it will only sync the files in your Dropbox folder. Our app helps to overcome this limitation by allowing any folder to sync with Dropbox right from its location.

Minimum System Requirments:

  • Dropbox Folder Sync addon requires an NTFS partition with Dropbox installed in that partition.
  • Works with Windows XP™ (SP 3), Vista™ and Windows 7™.
  • Requires Microsoft .NET framework 4.0

Usage:

  1. Run the Installer
  2. To sync‘  a folder with Dropbox, right click it and click “Sync with Dropbox“.
  3. The first time you run the application it automatically sets the Dropbox Folder (Or whenever the current Dropbox folder setting is corrupt)
If this detection fails, it prompts you to enter the Dropbox path through interface.
  4. For changing the Dropbox folder setting, go to Start Menu -> Programs -> Dropbox Folder Sync.
  5. Unsync it, if you don’t need it anymore in Dropbox, by again right-clicking (at original path) and selecting “Unsync with Dropbox”.

Features in detail

    Sync

  • Moves the source folder (the folder on which you right-click)  to the Dropbox. Creates a symbolic link at that location pointing to the corresponding folder inside Dropbox.
  • Thus you can access the same folder from two locations.
  • Symbolic links are created using the junction utility (installs automatically with the setup) from Sysinternals.
  • If a folder with the same name already exists in your Dropbox, then it asks if it should merge & overwrite. If you wish not to merge, it moves the folder to Dropbox with a modified name.
  • While syncin’, please ensure that no file in the folder is locked by any process.

    Unsync

  • Deletes the symbolic link, and moves the corresponding folder in Dropbox back to its original location.

    Change Dropbox Path

  • DFS automatically detects the Dropbox path at the first usage and whenever the Dropbox path setting is corrupt (for eg. Some path which is not a folder).
  • If you feel the folder is not the Dropbox folder or if you wish to sync the folder with some other folder which is inside Dropbox, Use the “Change” button on the GUI to change this setting.

How to remove it? There isn’t any unistall utility on Windows

  • Waze

I just installed it, but it doesn’t work for me. It moves the folder to the Dropbox folder, but it removes the original folder. See log entries.

    12/26/2011 5:22:22 AM Successfully Sync’ed N:@ApplicationNotesSettings.

Nevermind my previous comment. My N drive is really a mapping of a folder on my C drive. Apparently, it doesn’t work from a mapped drive. When I did it from the original folder on the C drive, it worked fine.

It seems that your solutions works fantastically well, except when trying to sync child folders of an IIS web application.

Because when I try to sync a child folder, the error message appears:

    ———–
An error occurred loading a configuration file: Failed to start monitoring changes to ‘D:WebSitesmy-root-domain_comsome-subfolderweb.config’ because access is denied.
    ———–

I do think this has something to do with the junctions you seem to create.

  • Jake Williamson

    i think i maybe missing something…

i right click a folder with one file in it:

    C:cdrive_test

and select ‘Sync with DropBox’. i get a ‘success’ message – all good, but…

it’s created a physical copy with one file in:

    C:Usersmy usernameDropboxcdrive_test

so it means my ‘C:Usersmy usernameDropbox’ location is getting bigger and bigger!

i *thought* it created a link:

“It actually works by moving the folder into Dropbox and then putting a symlink in its place.”

the problem being that i’m now storing the file in 2 locations on my c drive meaning taking up twice the space!

    is this correct?!

  • Ueli

Nice work! Would it be possible to code a similar program for google drive?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/YL3DFOJ6IRVQJV5CNJ6NECEHJM Don Bear Wilkinson

No, Jake, the files are not in two places. The whole trick with symlinks/junctions is that it fools the OS (and you) into thinking that they are. They are in the ‘source’ folder only, but when you click on a linked folder you are really looking at the source. It’s voodoo! :)

  • http://satyadeepk.in/ Satyadeep Karnati

As of now, you can use the same program for Google Drive and also Skydrive for that matter. Just go to Start -> Programs -> Dropbox Folder Sync and change the default destination path settings to match your Google Drive folder.

  • Jake Williamson

far out, that is voodoo ;)

thanks for the reply, makes a whole load more sense now…

i spose the only other question then is if the os is being ‘tricked’ into thinking that the space is being used up, will it start bitching if the total runs the disk size down too far…

with 25gig on windows sky drive, 5gig on google drive (which i can see going up and up in the not to distant future) and 25gig on dropbox, that’s 55gig that the os doesn’t ‘see’ but is there!

that’s quite a bit if something like photoshop is using the drive as a scratch disk…

tricky tricky – but clever stuff none the less ;)

  • Jake Williamson

clever stuff! maybe time to rename the app ‘sym link manager’ ;)
